You state “Anyone camping WITHOUT a firearm is on numerous levels a foolish person.” Your reasoning is that you NEED a firearm to protect yourself from the eminent attack of ferocious creatures (namely “rattlesnakes, copperheads, bobcats, brown bears, not to mention an innumerable array of rabid animals”) and child abductors lying in wait in the South Carolina wilderness. Is a gun an appropriate tool to protect yourself from snakes? The CDC states that approximately 12 to 15 people die per year from snake bites. In fact you are 42 times more likely to die from bee stings than snake bites. I wonder what size buckshot you should load to protect yourself from bees? While there are several documented cases of bobcats attacking humans, it is extremely rare. You will be lucky if you ever see a bobcat in the wild let alone be lucky enough to say you were attacked by one. I doubt you will be running into any brown bears in South Carolina, perhaps you should visit Yellowstone National Park if you want a close encounter with a brown bear. If you don’t want to contract rabies, then you may need to curb your desire to pet raccoons, skunks and bats. If you do get the disease, it is rarely fatal as long as you seek medical treatment soon after exposure. As far as child abductors are concerned, you are on your own, although they probably won’t bother with you as long as you don’t look like a 9 year old boy. NEWSFLASH…the woods can be a very dangerous place, there are all kinds of heavily armed nut jobs out there just waiting to take a shot at anything that goes bump in the night.

4. Sigmund Freud never said "A fear of weapons is a sign of a retarded and under developed sexuality." However, he did say, “When the wayfarer whistles in the dark, he may be disavowing his timidity, but he does not see any more clearly for doing so.”

I suppose you were trying to infer that I am afraid of firearms. This is not the case. I carry one every day as part of my job, as a Park Ranger. Do you think I carry a gun is for me to protect myself from wild animals? No. It’s to protect myself from weapon toting criminals that enjoy camping as much as they enjoy car-jacking.

5. I am glad that your “words of wisdom” were free, otherwise I would be requesting a refund.

6. Second, Rambo had an M60, not an M16.

Third, one need not be a Hollywood hothead to carry a firearm while camping. In the largely tame woods of South Carolina, one can run into rattlesnakes, copperheads, bobcats, brown bears, not to mention an innumerable array of rabid animals, all of which present a life threatening situation. And did you ever notice... the dead bodies of abducted children are always found IN THE WOODS? Newsflash.... the woods can be a very dangerous place. The woods are a favorite haunt of criminals. Anyone camping WITHOUT a firearm is on numerous levels a foolish person.

As Sig Freud said "A fear of weapons is a sign of a retarded and under developed sexuality."

And to the original poster, I would repeat the age old mantra "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to post to a blog and remove all doubt. "

These words of wisdom are free. Don't make the costly mistake of entering a hostile environment unprepared.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30494075.post-20859981584268139422008-03-10T12:51:00.000-07:002008-03-10T12:51:00.000-07:00actually dirty harry was the 44 mag not the 357actually dirty harry was the 44 mag not the 357Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12172182233735637715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30494075.post-84987160999508038642008-02-25T20:03:00.000-08:002008-02-25T20:03:00.000-08:00Dirty Harry used the Smith & Wesson .44 magnum.Dirty Harry used the Smith & Wesson .44 magnum.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30494075.post-61181613261191478182007-11-04T21:42:00.000-08:002007-11-04T21:42:00.000-08:00Ranger Gord, I was curious, how do you become a pa...Ranger Gord, I was curious, how do you become a park ranger?FANTiMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12571248092435989412noreply@blogger.com
